Glendalough

they are cousin of kin
black and beautiful
the two rivers round Glendalough
Elena and Monica
flowing and smooth
curly and rippled

they lull music
for the labour of monks
limbs and mind
legs and meditation
learning and running
hiding and roaming

through the years
in spite of swords and spears
round the jewel
of the two lakes
the two ladies
a moment in the mountains

between sky and sea
the still water of mankind
